FAQS
Here are some of the most common questions I get about working together.
If you don’t see your question listed or are ready to schedule a free consult, I welcome hearing from you.
-
Reach out via email with questions or to schedule an introductory call. I typically respond within 24-hours (Monday - Friday).
I offer introductory “meet and greet” consultation calls free of charge. Calls typically last 10-15 minutes and are an opportunity for you to ask questions, and for us to get a better sense of whether we might be a good match working together. If needed, I can provide you with additional referrals or resources in your area.
-
Hours are by appointment, Monday - Friday. I’m currently located on the East Coast, so I am able to offer early morning sessions (beginning at 6:00 AM PT) for clients in CA. For individuals in Maine, I have limited evening availability, as well.
-
I meet with clients on a weekly basis to start. In my experience, this helps us to get to know each other as we get started in our work together, and allows for momentum to develop as we work towards your goals for therapy. Sessions begin with a brief check-in followed by an invitation for you to choose what you would like to focus on that day. Because I offer an integrative approach to therapy, we may explore elements and patterns from your past, as well as ways to more easily navigate the present moment with grounding tools or centering practices. I do not assign weekly “homework,” but welcome working with you to identify intentions or action steps you’d like to take in between in our meetings.
-
My standard rate is $175 per 45-50 minute session. (This fee falls within market rate for the SF Bay Area and Greater Portland, ME.)
A portion of my practice is reserved for clients who might need an adjusted rate for weekly therapy, and I participate in the Open Path Psychotherapy Collective. Please feel free to inquire.
Payment is expected at the time of your appointment. Use of debit and credit cards, Health Savings Accounts, and Flexible Spending Accounts is welcomed. Good Faith Estimates are offered for individuals who are self-paying. Monthly Superbills are available upon request.

I suggest calling the member services number on the back of your health insurance card and asking the following questions:
Do you have out-of-network benefits for outpatient psychotherapy? (Billing code 90834, if asked.)
If yes, do you have a co-pay or a deductible, and in what amount? If a deductible, how much have you paid already?
What amount or percentage of your session fee will be reimbursed? And if they will share, what do they consider to be the usual and customary rate for therapy? (This is the amount your insurance has determined sessions should cost, and they will often only pay up to that amount, whether fully or a percentage.)
Do you have a set number of sessions annually or is your coverage based on medical necessity?
If in California, is your therapist required to be physically located in CA for reimbursement or can your therapist be licensed in CA and reside in another state?
Is there anything else they think you should know about your out-of-network coverage for outpatient psychotherapy?

If you are weighing using your insurance benefits for your therapy, please take note of the information below :
Use of insurance (in- or out-of-network) requires a mental health diagnosis. This diagnostic information will be included on your billing documentation and will become a part of your medical record.
Insurance companies can dictate your treatment, including limiting the number of sessions covered and the type of therapy that you receive.
Insurance companies may also seek to audit the records for your therapy.
-
To help ensure ease of use and confidentiality, I utilize an online meeting platform designed specifically for therapists and other healthcare providers. Sessions are HIPAA compliant and often reimbursable by insurance.
-
I only offer individual therapy at this time. You can look for providers who specialize in couple or family therapy on Psychology Today, Good Therapy, and Therapy Den.
-
I am a trauma-informed, but not trauma-specializing therapist. I am happy to assess with you whether your experiences and needs fall within my scope of practice.
-
The length of time someone is in therapy depends on their needs, goals, and also their relationship to therapy more generally. Some clients come in to work on something very specific, situational and time limited. Other clients may continue longer. This is something we’ll discuss at the start of therapy and revisit along the way.
